About & Methodology
My Planting Zone helps home gardeners answer three questions fast: what USDA zone am I in, when are my frost dates, and when should I plant.
Data sources
- Hardiness zones: USDA 2023 Plant Hardiness Zone Map (ZIP → zone).
- Frost dates: NOAA NCEI 1991-2020 U.S. Climate Normals (average last spring / first fall freeze), matched to your nearest weather station.
How planting dates are computed
Each crop has research-based offsets relative to your average last spring frost, e.g. tomatoes start indoors ~6-8 weeks before last frost and transplant 1-2 weeks after. We apply those offsets to your zone/city frost dates to build the calendar.
Important
These are averages for planning. Your microclimate, the current season, and the weather vary. Always check a local forecast before planting tender crops.
